This 6750 s.f. expansion to an existing 40-child Day Care center is sited on a large campus quadrangle at Lehman College, with the City University of New York as client. An existing one-story block building is reconfigured to contain four classrooms, multi-purpose space, and offices, and is linked to the existing facility across a gap by a new double-height volume. This 'gap building' which contains a multi-purpose space and music room, serves as the new campus entry to the expanded Center. Together with the new playground's undulating wall and the projected window volumes, the addition redefines this edge of the quadrangle, extending the daily activities of the Center onto the Green. An active sky-lit internal street with cubbies, display cases and balconies contrasts with the more serene surfaces of the classrooms behind.
