Artist House & Studio

Canaan, NY (1987-1990)

Architrope

The artist's summer residence is built on an old hayfield overlooking the Hudson Valley. Two new masonry and wood volumes form the edges of an outdoor room or court. The buildings and their siting introduce three scales into the landscape: the large scale roof and gabled porch towards the view, the civic scale porticoes facing onto the courtyard, and the domestic scale windows and doors cut into the white volumes behind. The site composition is an urban analogy of the typical New England town green.
